Wisserafdichtingen behouden een afdichtend contact met de zuigerstang wanneer de apparatuur stationair is (statisch, geen heen en weer gaande beweging van de stang) en in gebruik (dynamisch, heen en weer gaande stang), terwijl de tolerantie voor de stangdiameter d wordt bepaald door de stangafdichting. Zonder een veegafdichting zou de terugtrekkende zuigerstang verontreinigingen in de cilinder kunnen transporteren.
